Mountains in San Diego on fire. The eastern mountains in San Diego on fire during the 2003 brush fire.

In 2003 San Diego experienced one of the worst fires in its cities history and the third largest in California's history.

Over 273,246 acres burned with 2,232 homes lost, 22 commercial buildings, and 15 unfortunate fatalities, the total amount for the loss was an estimated $1.333 billion.

Many SERVPRO franchises rallied together in order to get home and property owners back into their houses as soon as possible.

So how would you properly prepare for a large brush or forest fire? What do you bring with you? What do you leave behind? Unlike water, fire leaves nothing but ashes and dust, so the amount of damage can be catastrophic.

Here are 10 things SERVPRO of San Diego East thinks you'll need!

  • Pets
  • Identification for the family
  • Cash and credit
  • Important Documents
  • Keys
  • Medication and Medicine
  • Hygiene Supplies
