Since there are so many variables that create a biohazard it’s hard to define an exact procedure that will take place for specific biohazards. Another variety is where the biohazard takes place, for example the tile floor, on wood floor, carpet, cement, etc. Most biohazards that deal with body fluids require extensive disinfectant.

If you need biohazard services make sure to contact a company like SERVPRO of San Diego East. But if you are not able to here are some steps that you should take:

  1. Make sure to double up on the gloves, wear goggles, and long sleeved clothes that you can throw away.
  2. Prepare the disinfectant in a spray bottle.
  3. Make sure to have a disinfectant bag.
  4. Use tongs to pick up sharp or broken glass.
  5. Cover the spilled area with absorbent material then remove it with a dust pan or tongs.
  6. Spray the disinfectant on the contaminated areas then cleanup with dust pan or tongs.
  7. Repeat steps 4 & 5 multiple times.
  8. Remove outer gloves and throw them into a biohazard bag.
  9. Once finished make sure to clean your hands very well.

Now that you know that a biohazard is exposure to biological and chemical contaminants you may be wondering what is considered a biohazard. The most common biohazards are: sewage backups, bloodborne pathogens, and illegal drug manufacturing labs / meth labs.

Sewage Backups

Sewage backups and dark water intrusions are more than nasty, smelly deposits – these damages also introduce harmful microorganisms into a structure. We remove the sewage, contaminants, and moisture, and help ensure the structure is properly cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized.

Bloodborne Pathogens

We remove and dispose of bodily fluids, tissue and other potentially pathogenic substances resulting from accident, trauma, crime or death. Trained SERVPRO of San Diego East Professionals clean, disinfect and deodorize the structure.

Illegal Drug Manufacturing Labs / Meth Labs

SERVPRO realizes many of the chemicals used in the production of illegal drugs such as "meth" are volatile and can leave harmful residues throughout a structure. We follow federal and state guidelines to properly clean all surfaces.

Here are other situations that are considered biohazards:

  • Crime scene residues
  • Suicide/death accidents
  • Homicide cleanups
  • Blood cleanup
  • Accident cleanup
  • Hoarding scenes
  • Animal waste/remains
  • Chemical spills
